Chandreshwar: The Lord of the Moon

As Legend goes Chandreshwar came to live here since the hour a meteor hit this spot of the hill almost 2500 years back. In a small clearing of a large and sylvan hill stands the Shri Chandreshwar Bhutnath Temple, on the road to Quepem, about 14 kms. South –east of Margao. It is dedicated to Chandreshwar, the Lord of the Moon, an incarnation of Shiva. Placed in such a way that It gets immersed in moonlight on full moon days, also the area around the temple is strangely infested by small rock crabs. The Lord of the Moon. is associated with the Bhoja dynasty who were the rulers of the region till the 8th century and in fact they named their capital Chandrapur after the deity.
