Belur and Halebid: Songs in Stone

Beautiful Belur, the quaint little town set elegantly on the banks of river Yagachi, amidst lush surroundings was earlier known as Velapuri. It was chosen as the capital of the Hoysalas, after the sacking and destruction of their capital at Dwarasamudra ,Halebeedu by delhi Sultans. The Hoysalas ruled the region between 4th and 13th Centuries.
The most artistically exuberant periods of ancient Hindu cultural development find expression in the magnificent shrines of the Hoysala temples at Halebid also known as Halebeedu and Belur also called Beluru and came to be known as Modern Vaikuntha. Heaven on earth. Songs in stone.
